Advantages of The Fetal Doppler

Fetal Doppler’s were originally created for doctors to use during ante natal visits but  recently, more and more parents are using their own fetal Doppler’s during pregnancy so they can monitor their unborn baby in between visits to the doctor or midwife. fetal_doppler_advantages-150x150

1. A fetal Doppler is a handheld ultrasound device that uses “the Doppler effect” (the change in frequency of a sound wave) to detect the baby’s heartbeat and allows you to hear it.

2. Some fetal Doppler’s have a small speaker, so more than one person can hear the heartbeat at the same time, others have headphones and some have the option to record the heartbeat.

3. Some models also read the heartbeat and display the baby’s heartbeat in beats per minute on a small screen – remember a baby’s heartbeat will be faster than you own at 120 – 160 beats per minute. Fetal-doppler-150x150

4. The main purpose of having your own fetal monitor is to give you peace of mind that your baby is doing well, particularly in high risk pregnancies.  Also of course, during normal pregnancies if you have any concerns about the baby’s activity or just need reassuring, you can check the baby’s heartbeat.

5. The ability to listen to your unborn baby’s heartbeat allows you to develop a unique bond with your baby before the birth and if the Doppler has an to option record, like the Angel Heart Fetal Doppler, you can send a recording to relatives who would otherwise have had to wait until they would be able to visit after the birth.

The Fetal Doppler is not, of course an alternative to ante natal care with your doctor and midwife but it is additional peace of mind during your pregnancy.
