Pulse Oximeters – A Great Early Warning System

Pulse Oximeters – A Great Early Warning System

These days, people are using portable home pulse oximeters for all sorts of reasons. They can be used to measure pulse and heart rate during exercise and meditation sessions. Pulse oximeters are also a good way to track the oxygen saturation levels in people with chronic respiratory system disorders such as asthma, cystic fibrosis and bronchitis.

Until recently, pulse oximeters were only available in hospitals and medical centres, but now the technology is available for you to use in your own home. One important function of an oximeter is that it can provide an early warning system when blood oxygen levels are low, but there are no serious outward symptoms of this.

One TempIR customer in America checked his baby daughter’s oxygen levels when she had a nasty cough. The child had no previous history of respiratory problems, and wasn’t particularly unwell, yet her oxygen saturations were dangerously low. When the parents reached the Emergency Room, they discovered their daughter was suffering from pneumonia. They were also told that their prompt action in bringing the child for treatment would mean a much speedier recovery, and therefore less suffering for the child, and less anxiety for her parents.

The thing is, serious respiratory system ailments are not always accompanied by laboured, noisy breathing. In fact, in many cases where pneumonia is diagnosed, the presenting symptoms bear no correlation to the severity of the condition.

Owning a pulse oximeter can save a lot of stress and suffering for the patient and the immediate family, and could even save a life. More and more people are coming around to the idea that a pulse oximeter is an important item of home health care equipment, and is just as indispensable as a thermometer.
